

From her mother, she has Spanish (Catalan and Castilian) and Italian ancestry, although both of her mother’s surnames are Spanish.

The name Shakira is Arabic ( شَاكِرَة, šākirah), from which language it translates as “grateful.” It is the feminine form of the name Shakir ( شَاكِر, šākir). Her paternal grandparents emigrated from Lebanon to New York City, where her father was born. Her father then emigrated to Colombia at age 5. She is the only child of Nidia Ripoll Torrado and William Mebarak Chadid.
